Reverend Al Green (b. 13 April 1946) is an American gospel and soul singer who enjoyed great popularity in the early- and mid-1970's. "Let's Stay Together" and "Tired of Being Alone" were two of his biggest hits.
Green boasted a voice capable of both fluid high streams of sugar and possessed deep south growls and rasps. This was perhaps the ideal complement to the orchestral, syruppy, strong soul production work of Hi Records wizard Willie Mitchell, who also helmed 70's classics for Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, and himself.
After an incident with a girlfriend that led to her killing herself after throwing boiling hot grits on his back, he switched to mainly religiously-themed music.
