Jeff Buckley (17 November 1966 - 29 May 1997) was the son of musicians Tim Buckley and Mary Guibert. The influences of artists as diverse as Edith Piaf, Nina Simone, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Led Zeppelin may be found in Buckley's music. His textured, dynamic voice, personal, powerful lyrics, and rich instrumentation have made his 1994 debut album Grace, a modern rock classic. Highlights include 'Last Goodbye', 'Lover, You Should've Come Over', and his cover version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'.
In concert, Buckley had a commanding stage presence including a self-deprecating sense of humour, a strong sense of play and perfect pitch.
Jeff passed away in a drowning accident in the Wolf River, in Memphis, Tennessee tributary of the Mississippi River, on May 29, 1997. Although drugs were rumored to have been in his system at the time of his death, none were present at the time of autopsy.
The posthumous album Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk was released in 1998, which included songs Buckley was working on while in Memphis for his upcoming release.
