Artist Biography

The Decemberists are an indie pop/folk band hailing from Portland, Oregon, specialising in morose sea chanties and upbeat songs about a myriad of fictional characters, such as chimney sweeps and vagabonds. They recently signed to Capitol Records, but until December 12, 2005 they were signed to Kill Rock Stars.

Their style is rather unconventional, often compared to Neutral Milk Hotel or Belle and Sebastian. Colin Meloy's lyrics are rarely simple love stories or expressions of emotion; he prefers writing stories rich with descriptive language and alive with vibrant characters from different times and places. They use a vast variety of instruments, many acoustic and a few electronic or synthesized.
