Rachel Unthank and the Winterset are one of the greatest bands to have come out of a folk revival that is growing accross the nation. From the South Coast the likes of Seth Lakeman have been selling Albums in the millions and from accross the pond beirut have shown how world folk music can be used to the most startling and beautiful results.
Rachel Unthank and the Winterset are the Northern belles who are making it known that it's not only men who can do folk bands in the 21st century. Originally from Newcastle they bring Geordie folk traditions and haunting melodies into modern folk.
Praise has been flying and the girls even scooped the New Horizons award at the 2008 Folk Music Awards. Currently on tour they played Southampton Joiners on the 24th April. If youw ere there you may even have been lucky enough to catch our own Paul Thorne in support with his band 'Ten Letters'.
Their second album 'The Bairns' is in the shops now. A purchase worth every penny.
